Vitamin Supplements, Good or Bad?

Interesting that some people will caution us not to take too many vitamins, because certain vitamins will build up in your system and might be toxic.  Turns out, this is not much of a risk.  Wikipedia says, “Death by vitamin poisoning appears to be quite uncommon in the US, typically none in a given year.”  NONE.  Not any, not even one, in a year.  (Cited source:  The cited article goes on to say, “If nutritional supplements are allegedly so “dangerous,” as the FDA and the news media so often claim, then where are the bodies?”  Good question!

On the other hand, from USA Today, “Addiction to prescription painkillers — which kill thousands of Americans a year — has become a largely unrecognized epidemic, experts say. In fact, prescription drugs cause most of the more than 26,000 fatal overdoses each year, says Leonard Paulozzi of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

Ouch.  And that’s just prescription painkillers – it does not include other types of pharmaceuticals routinely prescribed by doctors or administered in hospitals.

So, take your vitamins!  There is much more for you to gain than to lose in this deal.  And, while you’re in the medicine cabinet anyway, take a look at any prescription drugs that may be in there.  Talk to your doctor about whether there are lifestyle changes that will help you get free of the chemicals.  Best of luck to you!
